More than 200 girls from seven schools in Nottingham and Derby took part in a Girls Active Celebration Day earlier this month.
Co-designed by Girls Active Leaders, the day started with an inspirational speech from the amazing Sunshine Sam. The girls then took part in a choice of a wide range of activities including skateboarding, cheerleading, Kinball, street dance, indoor cycling, tennis, basketball and Drumba.
Active Notts and Active Derbyshire work in partnership with the Youth Sport Trust to deliver Girls Active at Djanogly City Academy, Park Vale Academy, Oakwood Academy, Nottingham Academy, Redhill Academy, Farnborough Academy and Bemrose School. Each school is supported by an ambassador.
The programme recognises the challenges girls experience to participation, and supports schools and empowers girls to make the necessary changes to PE and sport and physical activity provision to remove barriers and develop a relevant and vibrant offer to engage all girls, not just the sporty few.
The Girls Active Leaders have been working hard in their schools to support, influence and encourage their peers to be more active, and the event was about celebrating their achievements so far and inspiring more girls to take part and try something new.
