Our work in local places
We believe everyone should have the chance to lead an active, healthy life – no matter who they are or where they live. But we know that isn’t always the case. In some areas, especially where people face challenges like poverty, poor health or isolation, it’s much harder to be active.
Where are we focussing our efforts?
We’re focussing resources and efforts on the communities that face the greatest inequalities and need the most support to become more active.
This approach is rooted in listening to communities, building trust, and supporting local people who know their areas best.
We know that many things can make it harder for people to be active, including safety concerns, family commitments, money worries, limited public transport, and the cost of childcare.
Addressing these barriers takes long-term collaboration between local organisations and services, including councils, schools, the NHS, charities, community groups, and sports clubs.
Together, we are creating the conditions that help people move more, feel better, and live well.

Where else are we investing?
We’re working to ensure there is a degree of support or investment from Sport England and The National Lottery in every district in Notts and Derbyshire.
So alongside the Place Partnerships above, we’ve identified 12 additional communities where proportionate, targeted investment in skills, capacity, and collaboration could help create long-term, systemic change that enables more people to be active in ways that work for them.

Support to use existing community spaces, including the Parish Hall, orchard, and parks, for more resident-led activities.
Barrow Hill
Residents are being supported to shape and participate in health and physical activity provision on their doorsteps. There is a new Community Connector working locally and additional capacity from Community Growth CIC
Danesmoor
Four new roles bring capacity to build relationships, listen to residents and support the community to shape what physical activity opportunities are delivered locally.
Gamesley
A strategic lead to turn community voices into actions, and a coordinator to create local activities with residents.
Somercotes, Riddings & Ironville
Positive messages about everyday movement and co-designing opportunities to move more with local people.
Shirebrook
Exploring barriers to physical activity and creating family-focused activity opportunities.
Newhall
The role of parks in local physical activities is expanded by improved accessibility and new signage.
Nottinghamshire
Cotgrave
A new trainee youth worker providing new activities at the youth centre on Friday and Saturday evenings.
Killisick
A community connector to identify and remove barriers to physical activity. They enable local residents to shape and own the spaces and activities that will improve their wellbeing.
Hawtonville
In partnership with Your CVS, a new role engages with the community, services, and other system partners. They seek to understand what will catalyse change to current policy and increase the value put on green spaces.
Eastwood
A programme of activities targeted towards children, with a lens of providing inclusive activity for those with SEND
Warsop
A new mentor to upskill residents to run activities from the health hub.
