Community-led fund to improve the National Cycle Network

Active Derbyshire, Active Notts, Funding, News

A new pilot scheme will support community groups to improve their local National Cycle Network and help more people walk, wheel and cycle for everyday journeys.

Active Travel England funds the Community-led National Cycle Network Improvement Fund through Walk Wheel Cycle Trust. The Trust will support two community groups to progress infrastructure-focused projects that, when they have been completed, will help and encourage more people use their local National Cycle Network.

The two successful projects will receive support funded by Active Travel England, including:

  • Walk Wheel Cycle Trust staff will provide access to a multidisciplinary team with expertise, knowledge, resources and skills.
  • Community groups can use a grant to buy activities, equipment, items and/or services that the Trust does not provide.

What the scheme aims to achieve

  • Help communities shape, enhance and improve the National Cycle Network.
  • Encourage more people to embrace and value their local National Cycle Network.
  • Increase walking, wheeling and cycling for everyday journeys on the National Cycle Network.
  • Encourage more people from a wider range of backgrounds to use the National Cycle Network.

What support will community groups receive?

Access to the Active Travel England-funded support will be given to the two successful projects. This does include the Walk Wheel Cycle Trust staff resource and a grant.

Projects must finish by 30 September 2027.

The fund is open to several types of organisations, including constituted community groups, Community Interest Companies, small charities with an income of £250,000 or less, and Town and Parish Councils.

Applications close at 10.00 am on Friday 10 July 2026.
