The Environment Agency has outlined its support for projects that reinvest fishing licence income into measures to benefit anglers.
The Fisheries Improvement Programme will make money available for work to enhance habitat and facilities. It will also assist fisheries in adapting to climate pressures.
A total of £730,000 will be available in 2026. Most awards are expected to be under £5,000 and applicants must show evidence of match funding.
Support may cover coarse, trout and eel habitat or passage work, steps to manage prolonged dry weather, or climate impacts and measures to improve fisheries management. This may include water quality monitoring equipment or expert advice.
Projects improving access and facilities are also within scope, such as upgraded platforms, pegs and pathways, or work in urban areas where local need has been identified. River, canal and still water sites can be considered and proposals from smaller volunteer-led clubs are welcomed.
Eligible proposals can come from angling clubs, fisheries, NGOs, local authorities and other groups involved in angling.
The deadline for applications is 6 February 2026
