Health and care partners from across Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Lincolnshire attended the East Midlands Moving Well Conference, hosted by Active Notts, Active Derbyshire, Active Lincolnshire, East Midlands Combined County Authority, Derby and Derbyshire and Nottingham and Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire Integrated Care Board, and The NHS Alliance.
Held at Nottingham’s Jubilee Conference Centre on Thursday 17 September, delegates explored how we might recognise, support and prioritise movement as a core part of prevention, care and recovery, as the event asked – how do we turn the Moving Well agenda, tackling health inequalities and extending healthy life expectancy, from policy into practice.
The event was opened by Rachel North, Vice Chair, of Active Notts and Active Derbyshire, and compered by Michael Wood, Head of Health Economic Partnerships at The NHS Alliance.
Speakers included Dr Jeanelle de Gruchy, Deputy Chief Medical Officer for England; Dr Lola Abudu, Interim Deputy Regional Director of Public Health/Health and Wellbeing, Office for Health Improvement and Disparities – Midlands; Tom Burton, Strategic Lead – Health & Wellbeing Policy at Sport England; and Scott Hartley, Director, Press Red.
Dr Duncan Gooch, Chair of The NHS Alliance’s Primary Care Network, delivered a keynote exploring Neighbourhood Leadership and Flock Theory and how a neighbourhood is a flock of assets: the public, VCSE, general practice, community services, social care, local government and others. Each retains autonomy. Each can change direction. Each responds primarily to what is immediately around them. Yet when aligned around a shared purpose, something powerful emerges.
The morning session also featured voices from the community, including Aliyah Khan and Nosheen Ali from Community Action Derby, and explored how Moving Well is making a difference in everyday lives and why listening to community voices is so important in shaping a healthier future for everyone.
Following a lunchtime walk, delegates were able to choose from workshops entitled ‘From Advice to Possibility’, ‘Permission to Move?’, ‘Moving Well, Working Well’, ‘Reaching Underserved Communities Impacted by Cancer’, and ‘Beyond Referrals: reimagining how we work together – outcomes from working with Derby’s reablement service’.
Attendees then came back together to hear from Dr Kathy McLean, Chair of the Derby and Derbyshire, Nottingham and Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire Integrated Care Board; and Claire Ward, Mayor of East Midlands Combined County Authority.
Delegates also shared their own ‘big ideas’ about what key issue, opportunity or challenge we could explore together through the lens of Moving Well over the next six months.
