Below are some key points taken from Terri Elliott’s section from the Talking Space: Learning from the Walk Notts Festival in embedding walking and wheeling into everyday lives that was held on Tuesday 21st July.
Terri highlighted how a School Active Travel Project at Standhill Infants used walking and scooting to improve road safety, health, learning and climate action.
Five key points were:
- Children who walk, cycle, or scooter to school develop better road sense and independence, which motivated her involvement.
- The project used a three-phase approach: data collection, road safety education, and active travel promotion (including Walk to School Week).
- Barriers to walking included time constraints for parents and poor weather, while children enjoyed the social and sensory aspects of walking.
- The project led to increased active travel rates, widespread resource sharing with other schools, and highlighted the importance of rewards and adapting to local needs.
5.Walk to School Week showed the project could increase active travel, with some classes reaching 83% and 87% participation.
