How Opening Schools Facilities funding has supported more young people to be active

Funding from Opening School Facilities enabled a number of schools across Notts and Derbyshire to open their school’s facilities in the evenings, weekends, or during the school holidays.

In 2021 almost £350,000 of Department of Education funding was invested. This was predominantly in secondary schools, with a higher than national average percentage of young people in receipt of free school meals, ensuring the money was spent in areas with a high level of inequality.

Funding was used to provide coaching, buy new sports equipment, and improve facilities. It was also awarded for portable floodlights, to increase access for pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), to employ specialist coaches, and to increase understanding and education.

A series of stories of change can be downloaded below, which include hints, tips and information to help take your school’s facilities to the next level.
