Derby Place Partnership

At its heart, our Place Partnership work in Derby recognises that communities know best.

In Derby, we work across communities, the voluntary sector, health, and care to build the trust and local leadership that enables residents to move more and live well.

What has emerged from our work so far is a system that is ready for change and is beginning to move!

Why Derby?

According to Sport England’s Active Lives survey, there are neighbourhoods in Derby where one third of adults are completely inactive.

Using this Active Lives data alongside wider social data, five priority areas were identified and grouped into three localities that would be the focus of our Place Partnership work: Chaddesden West, Allenton and Osmaston, and Normanton and Arboretum.

Facts from our Derby Place Partnership work

Chaddesden West

Over 30% of adults physically inactive.

90% describe their ethnicity as White.

3% describe their ethnicity as Asian.

Allenton and Osmaston

31% of adults physically inactive.

70% describe their ethnicity as White.

10% describe their ethnicity as Asian.

Normanton and Arboretum

35% of adults physically inactive.

25–35% describe their ethnicity as White.

Around half (50%) of residents describe their ethnicity as Asian.

What’s been done so far in Derby Place Partnership?

In 2024, Derby received Phase 1 Place Partnership funding from Sport England.

  • We set out to understand the people, communities, and physical assets in the three locations we are focused on.
  • We built relationships with and between the council’s neighbourhood teams, primary care network managers, the Derby Health Inequalities Partnership, the integrated care board, the council, the Derby community health services, and the voluntary, community, and social enterprises (VCSEs).
  • Our work built a shared understanding of the local barriers to being more active. It also brought stakeholders together to develop plans to address these barriers, for example through policy and different ways of working.

What are we doing now in Derby Place Partnership?

In 2026, Derby received Place Expansion funding from Sport England. Below are some highlights of the work we are undertaking.
