Kirk Hallam, Erewash, Place Partnership

The Kirk Hallam (Erewash) Place Partnership is about strengthening relationships, aligning priorities, and creating the conditions so everyone can move more and live well.

Local people have told us they want physical activity opportunities that are local, accessible, and high quality. They want to feel confident about being active in ways that fit their lives.

We’re making that happen through our Place Partnership work: building on local strengths and collaborating to change systems and ways of working so that everyone can be more active and inequalities reduce.

Our work will strengthen relationships, align priorities, and create the conditions for local people and organisations to work together effectively.

Why Kirk Hallam?

According to Sport England’s Active Lives survey, in Kirk Hallam one third of adults are completely inactive.

Using this Active Lives data and other local information, Kirk Hallam was identified as an area where investment, support, and action would have the greatest impact.

What’s been done so far in Kirk Hallam Place Partnership?

In 2024, Kirk Hallam received Phase 1 Place Partnership funding from Sport England. Together with local partners and residents, we built the foundations for a more joined-up, place-based approach to improving physical activity opportunities.

  • With local people and organisations, we completed a System Maturity Matrix assessment to identify strengths and opportunities for improvement. We will repeat this to measure progress over time.
  • Supported the creation of a resident action group.
  • Held a two-day systems leadership event that set a shared purpose between 40 stakeholders and ensured they had the skills and capabilities to work together in one system.
  • Initiated a cultural shift toward using place-based insights to inform activities and changes.
  • Worked with children and young people to gain an understanding of their priorities and ideas. This lead to one school adopting an ‘active’ uniform that enabled children, and especially girls, to be more active.

Now we’ve identified local assets and understood the existing ways of working, we have a better understanding of what is helping people to be active, where there are gaps, and where further improvements could be made.
