Diane Holmes and Carol Hallam from ATTFE College shared how their Walk Notts Festival activity used a local walk and picnic to support learner wellbeing, community connection and confidence in getting active.
• ATTFE College used the Walk Notts Festival as an opportunity to promote walking, well-being and personal development among adult learners, volunteers, staff, families and wider community members.
• Activities were designed to accommodate different abilities and preferences. This allowed participants to choose their own pace and distance, which encouraged greater involvement and comfort.
• Trust in event leaders and a sense of community were crucial. This made participants feel safe, welcomed, and more likely to join in and return for future activities.
• The events led to new connections. Such as: partnerships with local organisations, increased volunteering, and participants discovering new local spaces and opportunities for personal growth.
• The focus on wellbeing was central, with activities supporting both physical and mental health. The collaborative approach fostered ongoing motivation for individuals and organisations to continue promoting active lifestyles.
