Below are key points from the Talking Space: Learning from the Walk Notts Festival in embedding walking and wheeling into everyday lives from Jessica H and Marzena from BCVS section.
Jessica Hardwick and Marzena Karp-Singh highlighted how partnership working in Bassetlaw is helping families in Manton access support, activities and green spaces in ways that work for them.
Five key points were:
- Community Engagement in Deprived Areas: Focused on Manton, a deprived and hard-to-engage community, using creative projects to build trust and relationships.
- Collaborative Approach: Success was driven by collaboration between multiple organisations, each bringing unique skills and reaching different audiences, which increased engagement and resource efficiency.
- Inclusive, Multi-Generational Activities: Organised free, accessible events like scavenger hunts, fun days, and trips to green spaces (Clumber Park), encouraging participation from all ages and backgrounds.
- Physical Activity by Stealth: Incorporated walking and movement into fun, social activities (e.g., scavenger hunts, group outings), making physical activity enjoyable and approachable for participants.
- Sustained Impact and Growth: The collaborative model led to more frequent events, growing partnerships, and ongoing plans for future activities, demonstrating lasting positive change in community engagement and wellbeing.
