Active Lives Survey: Children and Young People

The Active Lives Survey: Children and Young People provides a world-leading approach to gathering data on how children engage with sport and physical activity.

Designed by Sport England, the Department for Education (DfE), the Department for Health (DfH), and the Department for Digital Culture Media and Sport (DCMS), its purpose is to gain a detailed insight into the current physical activity habits of the nation’s children and young people (5 to 16).

For more information specifically around the background of the survey please see Sport England’s website:

You can also watch an introduction to the Active Lives Children and Young People Survey here:

How does the survey work?

The survey will be school-based and will cover measures of children’s:

  • Activity levels
  • Physical literacy
  • Swimming proficiency
  • Well-being
  • Self-efficacy
  • Levels of social trust

Each term Sport England provide Active Notts and Active Derbyshire with a random sample of schools that have been selected to take part in the survey. One class in up to three different year groups will be asked to fill out the questionnaires.

Find out which schools have been selected for Autumn 2024 in Notts and Derbyshire.

While not all schools will be asked to take part in the survey this academic year, Sport England estimate that schools will be asked to take part every three or four years. They have designed the survey to be as easy for schools to administer as possible. The survey can be done at any point in the relevant term, depending on what works best for the school involved.

Active Notts and Active Derbyshire will provide schools with everything they need, including templates for letters to parents, information sheets for teachers and pupils, and technical guidance.

Why should my school get involved?

  • Completion of the survey is the only way to obtain a Healthy School Rating
  • Schools get points for completing the surveys which they can exchange for sports equipment
  • Access to a detailed report of the school’s outcomes on Physical Activity and Health & Wellbeing which can be used to help identify areas for PE and School Sport Premium investment
  • Insight which will be useful in OFSTED Health & Wellbeing reports

We have also produced a film clip, below, which explains how schools in Notts and Derbyshire have used the survey, and the benefits which they have seen to taking part:

What does the questionnaire involve?

The questionnaires have been designed to be simple and enjoyable for pupils to complete and are tailored to different age groups.

They can be completed on desktop computers, laptops or tablets and take around 20 minutes to fill in. We will also ask one teacher from each school to complete a 10-minute survey to give some broader context to the pupils’ responses.

For the youngest pupils in Years 1 and 2, we are also asking parents to fill out a questionnaire to give further information about their child’s physical activity behaviours. Some schools may, therefore, be asked to let parents know about this.
