Young leaders co-create Girls Active event

Active Derbyshire, Active Notts, News, Support Others

Young leaders from City of Derby Academy, The Bemrose School and Djanogly City Academy have taken part in a Girls Active event which they co-created, co-designed and co-delivered.

The event was held at the Sports Hub at Nottingham Trent University’s Clifton Campus on Friday 28 June.

It included activities focussing on strength, flexibility and functional fitness, self-love, self-appreciation, girls’ empowerment, female solidarity, nutrition and healthy eating and how that affects physical activity, and a focus around how girls feel when being active as opposed to just how they look. Young leaders from Djanogly delivered a dance session to their peers.

All of the elements on the day were chosen following input from the girls. Ambassadors Charm, Misba, Asfana and Lucy had each spent time in the school which they are supporting, talking to the girls about what they would like the day to look like. This input also fed into details such as the snacks on offer and the colour and design of t-shirts which they were given.

Taking learnings on from last year’s Girls Active event, to create a safe space for the girls the event included only female deliverers and staff, long sleeve t-shirts were offered as well as short sleeve t-shirts, free sports hijabs were given to those girls who wanted them, and a healthy breakfast was offered at the start of the day.
