Girls Active evaluation finds many positive impacts on girls taking part

Active Derbyshire, Active Notts, Insight, News

An evaluation of the Girls Active programme in Nottingham City and Derby City has found that it has positively impacted the girls taking part in a number of ways.

The evaluation by Nottingham Trent University found that it has had a positive impact on the physical activity levels of the girl leaders, alongside an improved awareness of opportunities for physical activity (as opposed to ‘sport’) and an improved understanding of the health benefits of physical activity.

The Impact Report also said that Girls Active has had a positive impact on the personal development of the girl leaders, giving them greater confidence, allowing them to improve transferable skills such as communication, giving them an opportunity to be a role model, and develop new friendships.

There has also been improvements in the girls’ academic achievements, with skills developed during Girls Active transferring into their wider school and home life.

Students from City of Derby Academy, The Bemrose School, Derby Moor Academy and Djanogly City Academy have been taking part in Girls Active, which is delivered in Derby and Nottingham by Active Derbyshire and Active Notts, working with the Youth Sport Trust.

The programme has a focus on enabling children to have positive experiences of being active throughout their childhood, and working with people and communities who experience the greatest inequality.

An integral part of Girls Active is the prioritisation of youth voice, ensuring that the girls are involved in decision making that informs how the programme develops each year.

The programme also tackles the evolving barriers girls experience to physical activity participation during secondary school, by cultivating a movement and empowering the girls to develop as role models who can deliver physical activity opportunities to other girls within their school.
