More than 70 girls from Nottingham City schools took part in the Empower Girls Leadership event alongside student volunteers from the University of Nottingham as part of work to support and inspire girls to move more.
Organised by the University of Nottingham, School Sport Nottingham and Active Notts, the event was held at David Ross Sports Village and gave the girls the chance to try activities such as fencing, table tennis and boxing.
Workshops delivered by the Youth Sport Trust also helped the girls explore the motivations and barriers to being active and moving more and gave the girls the chance to build confidence in their leadership skills.
Leaders from each school will now start to plan and prepare activities which they will deliver to year seven pupils from next term. The girls will also be supported by student volunteers from the University of Nottingham who will go into the individual schools and work closely with each group of leaders.
There are also plans to bring all of the girls back together in the summer to share and celebrate what the girls have achieved within their schools.
Sanah, who was among the girls who took part in the Empower event, said: “I thought the day was really good. It has inspired me to become a good leader to help girls who lack confidence in sport. I want to help others so they don’t have to hide behind others. I loved the whole day.”
Girls took part from Bluecoat Beechdale Academy, Bluecoat Wollaton Academy, The Bulwell Academy, Djanogly City Academy, Ellis Guilford School, Hollygirt School, Nottingham Academy, Nottingham Free School, Nottingham Girls Academy, Nottingham University Academy of Science and Technology (NUAST), and The Trinity Catholic School.
