Today, as part of the forum, Sally and Chris from Derwent Valley Orienteers organised an Orienteering session around Alvaston Park…..IT WAS SO MUCH FUN!! I didn’t realise how much fun orienteering could be and how competitive it could become 😊or maybe that was just Katy West who coordinates and facilitates this forum…she was actually running at parts and did succeed in winning the event – WELL DONE KATY lol.
They explained how you can download an app and do various courses all over the country but more locally, Derwent Valley Orienteers run various events across the City. Their passion and enthusiasm were infectious, they are eager to increase participation in their sport as it offers a space to be sociable, meet new friends, have fun and keep active at your own pace. They stressed that there is no need to rush – but for those that are more competitive, it can offer that element too. We heard from Sally and Chris that there will be a big orienteering event in Derby City Centre on New Years Day – there has already been approximately 300 people sign up…. I know I am going to be there! It’s a great way to spend time with the family or to mix with others if you’re alone and perfect for walking off all that food and sweet treats tempting you over the festive period. Meeting Derwent Valley Orienteers was a great opportunity to understand the sport better and how it can be an activity shared across age ranges and physical abilities.
