This professional development session is designed to equip education and sports professionals with the knowledge, strategies, and confidence to create neuro-inclusive environments in physical education and sport. The aim is to foster awareness and enhance practical strategies for effectively supporting neurodiverse students.

Aimed at PE Leads, PE Teachers, Teachers, TAs, SENCOS, SLTs, & Pastoral Staff working in schools across Notts.

Two identical sessions will be held, so please select whether you wish to attend the morning session (9.15am – 12.15pm) or the afternoon session (1.15pm – 4.15pm).

The workshop will include:

Hour 1: Introduction to Neurodiversity and Inclusive Practices

High-Level Overview: Understanding neurodiversity beyond definitions with a focus on behaviour and traits and the benefits to the embedding the social versus medical models of disability.
Deep Dive into ASD and ADHD: Detailed exploration of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), including practical strategies to support students with these conditions.
Neuroinclusive Environments: Examination of environmental impacts on neurodiverse individuals’ wellbeing, engagement and performance, focusing on sensory considerations and structuring spaces.

Hour 2: Practical Strategies and Case Studies

Neurodiversity and High-Performance Athletes: Exploration of how neurodivergent traits can positively correlate with athletic excellence, underscoring the importance of a strengths-based approach over deficits.
Activation and Support: Techniques for early identification, support strategies, and methods to proactively accommodate and empower neurodivergent students.
Breakout Session – Case Studies:
• Small-group discussions analysing real-life scenarios, highlighting successful interventions and strategies tailored to neurodivergent students.
• Emphasis on adaptable and practical strategies that participants can immediately implement.
• Sharing and group discussion to consolidate learning.
Exploring Perspectives & Self-Reflection Session: Interactive, supportive session designed to explore self-awareness among participants. This exercise will encourage thoughtful reflection on personal perspectives and assumptions in teaching practices, with a focus on enhancing inclusivity and understanding.

Hour 3: Learning in Motion and Varied Sports Integration

Learning through Integrated Movement: Interactive presentation on blended sessions merging PE with academic learning. Drawing on the enactment effect, participants will discover how incorporating movement significantly boosts memory, problem-solving, and critical thinking. Research highlights that physically engaging in learning tasks can reduce the repetitions required for retention from 300 (sedentary learning) down to just 35, creating stronger cognitive connections through sensory activation and action-based experiences.
Breakout Session – Ideation on Integrated Learning:
• Collaborative workshop enabling participants to develop practical strategies to integrate academic content into PE and physical movement into classroom teaching.
• Facilitated discussions for sharing effective practices tailored to participant contexts.
Supporting Neurodivergent Participation in Varied Sports: Practical guidance for introducing neurodivergent students to new sporting activities and environments, using inclusive strategies and adaptable social games to enhance engagement.

Please note than a £50 refundable deposit is required to book a place, this can be done online below using a credit/debit card or PayPal. This will be refunded on completion of feedback eight weeks after completing the course. There will be no refunds for non-attendance on the day.
