A group of 70 girls from seven schools across Nottingham and Derby have taken part in a Girls Active Inspiration Day at Nottingham Trent University’s Clifton Sports Hub.
Girls Active is a national programme run by Youth Sport Trust (YST) which recognises the challenges girls experience to taking part in physical activity, and supports schools and empowers girls to make the necessary changes to PE, sport and physical activity provision to remove barriers and develop a relevant and vibrant offer to engage all girls, not just the sporty few.
Active Notts and Active Derbyshire have been working in partnership with YST to deliver the programme in schools in Derby City and Nottingham City.
The Girls Active Inspiration Day kick-started a new round of the programme, involving girls from Djanogly City Academy, Park Vale Academy, The Oakwood Academy, Nottingham Academy, Redhill Academy, Farnborough Academy and Bemrose School.
A group of girls from each school were chosen by their teachers to attend, and took part in a series of practical sessions, trying cardio tennis, Kin-Ball, street dance and cricket. They also took part in a number of theory workshops to support them to go back into their schools and influence and encourage their peers to be more active.
Each of the group of girls is also being supported by an ambassador who will visit them in their schools to find out more about the girls’ own experiences of being active and then support them to shape a School Games event which will be held on June 10.
Gemma MacNaughton, Head of PE at The Oakwood Academy, said: “This is our first year of being involved in Girls Active and already our girls have got so much from it, and myself as a teacher has got so much from it.”
Following the event the girls reported seeing an increase in their confidence to carry out their role as a Girls Active leader. They also felt their self-belief, resilience and ability to work to work as part of a team had improved.
