Derby Place Partnership

Sport England is investing in local communities, specifically in those places where it is hardest to be active.

Through placed-based working we can work deeply in a place, developing meaningful partnerships with communities and the organisations that support them – this is why we are calling the work ‘Place Partnerships’. With these partnerships in place we can better co-design opportunities which make it easier for residents to be active when they step out of their homes.

The work in Derby is being focused on five specific places (Middle Super Output Areas or MSOAs) in the city but with a wider focus on connecting the services, support organisations, partnerships and communities together across the whole city.

The places of focus are:
Chaddesden West
Rose Hill and Castlewood
Normanton North and Peartree
Normanton South
Allenton and Osmaston

A number of factors have led Sport England to the focus of the areas including the levels of physical activity. In these places, an average of 34% of adults in these areas are physically inactive, a rate significantly higher than both the county and national levels.

Graph shows inactivity leavels in Allenton and Osmaston, Normanton South, Normanton North and Peartree, Rose Hill and Castleward, Cheddesden West are over 30% compared to Derbyshire and England at 26%

Led by a Leadership Group made up of a number of partners, we’re working together to really understand what we can do to address some of the barriers in place for people in our communities which individuals can’t control. We call these systemic barriers. This could mean the way that processes work within local authorities or the way that funding is allocated. We know from insight that just offering opportunities for activities for a limited period of time doesn’t work. There are so many factors which contribute to why someone isn’t active. Some of this is down to individuals but so much of it is because of how our services work, or don’t always work so well together.

There are so many ways for services to work better together and this work is to understand what these are and how we can make this happen.

Once we can work better together, we can maximise the opportunities to support our communities to be active as part of their everyday lives.
